I am not fully a minimalist, and I am very much a homebody, but I don't like having a lot of stuff, and one of the things I have done for money is help clear out other people's homes, and it really does make you aware of how much we do not need. And sometimes it is so hard to convince people to get rid of literal garbage, because they have become attached to it! It is so interesting. Anyway, good luck cleaning out the rest of your mom's house. :-)

It’s been a great experience for everyone involved. My mom has enjoyed the purging.

I am the one who tidies up after my presence like a polite little ghost!

This made me think about how my Papa's death changed some things for my Dad. My Papa kept e v e r y t h i n g. But that was a natural, scarcity mindset of an immigrant from Slovakia who worked incredibly hard for everything. My Dad sorting through my Papa's life, even 3 years after his passing, leaves my Dad in tears occasionally. Moments like that have brought him and I closer together. But it's also motivated my Dad and his partner to do Swedish death cleaning (to be clear, they're in their mid-fifties, so lotsa life left). But my Dad says he doesn't want to put me and my brother through needing to sort through his things in our grief when he goes.

I appreciate that now, and I'm sure I'll appreciate it even more when that day comes. But like, not for at least another 30 years please and thank you.

Caylyn, thanks so much for this share. You also sent me down the Swedish Death Cleaning rabbit hole. What an interesting concept, I’d never heard of it before.

If you write about it, tag me! I haven’t been brave enough to dig in yet 🙈

I'm just waking up but you got me with bearnaise. I have to ask you a question. Did you know that bearnaise is just hollandaise sauce with tarragon added to it? It's true!

Fun fact of the day, thanks Carl!
